If you make SumatraPDF your default PDF reader and then just double-click PDF documents to open them, you should never see the default background at all.
Otherwise, you can change the color through the -bgcolor command line argument. E.g. running
"C:\Program Files\SumatraPDF\SumatraPDF.exe" -bgcolor #808080
from a command prompt will turn the background gray (assuming that the path to SumatraPDF.exe is correct). See http://www.w3schools.com/html/html_colors.asp for more color codes.
